Anastasiades and Akinci meet to discuss Governance, EU and Economy issues

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci have a meeting on Tuesday evening in Geneva to discuss pending issues of Governance, the EU and the Economy.

At the beginning of the meeting the negotiators of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot side Andreas Mavroyiannis and Ozdil Nami informed the leaders on the results of a meeting the experts of the two sides on Governance had in the afternoon to further discuss pending issues that were on the agenda of the leaders' meeting this morning.

Then the leaders continued their discussions with issues of Governance that were not discussed during their meeting in the morning.

CNA has learnt that tonight's meeting is taking place in the presence of European Commission's representative to the UN Good Offices Mission in Cyprus Pieter Van Nuffel, as certain aspects of these issues have to do with the EU, of which Cyprus is a member state since 2004.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Anastasiades and Akinci have been engaged in UN-led talks since May 2015, with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof.
